Collaboration Opportunity:  Latina  Community Perinatal Support Specialist Training

Oportunidad de colaboración: Español comunidad Doula formación “Promotores de Salud Para El Embarazo, El Parto y La Lactancia”

  1. So, looking at the site for this event, I find it interesting that (at least in their bios), neither of the instructors identifies as Latina. Either of them may be Latina, since we (I’m speaking as a self-id’d Latina now) come in all colors and I wouldn’t be bold enough to assume one way or another from their pics.

A large part of this 5 day training has to do with CBE, BF info and overall perinatal/postpartum info. & support. And there is some language referring to the overall mission to be addressing cultural competency, while other places in the text refer to cultural awareness. If the instructors aren’t Latina, how does cultural competency/awareness get addressed?

Can anyone shed any light on this? Thanks!

    • It is true neither of the instructors are Latina. However, the trainers are skilled as cultural competency and awareness instructors. Dr. Sayida Peprah, Psy. D., CD, is a Clinical Psychologist with a emphasis in multi-cultural community mental health. Cordelia Hanna-Cheruiyot, MPH, ICCE, CLE, CBA while she is Caucasian has a commitment to cultivating women of color as birth workers. Her background working in public health and community midwifery has inspired her commitment to outreaching to underserved populations where the perinatal disparities are worse and where there is a great need for indigenous birth workers. The women taking this course are Latina as well as Filipina and African-American. That is the target audience to attend the course. After completing requirements, they will be qualified to participate in a Community Based Doula Program serving Medi-Cal clinics in Los Angeles whose clientele are predominantly Latna. Additionally, the charitable contributor for this initiative requested that the target audience be Latinas. Therefore, it is a Latina Community Perinatal Support Specialist Course. in short, just because we happen to be White or Black, does not mean that we cannot see the need for more Latina birth workers to serve their own communities in a culturally responsive way. We are providing this opportunity to create more women of color who have the knowledge of breastfeeding, childbirth education, perinatal nutrition, pre and interconception health.

  2. The Perinatal Support Specialist Course has been changed to June 10, 17, 24 and July 1 and 8, held in Los Angeles. The fee has been reduced by $100 per person. Please can you repost the event with this new website and information? For more information, contact The Association for Wholistic Maternal and Newborn Health’s Executive Director, Cordelia Hanna-Cheruiyot at or call 626.388.2191. REGISTRATION DEADLINE IS JUNE 6, 2013.
